Finding a home sleep test
A home sleep apnea test is a clinical service, not just a device. A clinician decides whether home testing fits you and orders the test, and a qualified clinician interprets the recording (AASM position statement (opens in a new tab)). Compare everything around the recording, not only the test fee.
What to compare
- Assessment and ordering
- Device and test nights
- Interpretation
- Report access
- Consultations
- Prescription access
- Required charges
- Payment route
- State availability
- Failure and cancellation terms

Questions to ask a testing service
- What does the total charge include: the assessment, the test, interpretation, a results visit, and shipping?
- Do you serve patients in my state?
- Do I need a visit before the test, after it, or both? Is each visit billed separately?
- How will I get my sleep report, and how will I get a copy of any prescription that’s issued?
- What happens if the clinician decides home testing isn’t right for me, or the recording doesn’t collect enough data?
- If I plan to use insurance for treatment later, will your test and records meet my plan’s requirements? What should I confirm with my plan first?
Choosing CPAP equipment
Your prescription and your clinician determine the type of machine and its settings. What you can compare is the exact configuration a seller offers and the terms around it.
What to compare
- Exact model and configuration
- Package contents
- New or refurbished
- Compatible components
- Prescription submission
- Support and warranty
- Returns after opening

Questions to ask a CPAP seller
- Does this machine match what my prescription specifies?
- What’s included in the package, and what will I need to buy separately?
- Is the machine new or refurbished?
- How do I submit my prescription, and how long does verification take?
- Can I return the machine after opening or trying it? Within what window, starting when, and what does a return cost?
- Who handles setup questions and warranty claims?
- If I need a new mask, which types and sizes work with this machine, and can masks be returned?
- If I travel, what power options does this machine support?
Understanding costs
A price is comparable only when you know what it buys. Separate the core charge from the steps and items around it, and keep published cash prices apart from what you’d pay through insurance.
Testing costs
What can add to a testing price
- Test fee
- Required consultations
- Interpretation
- Shipping
- Later care
| Listed fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Home sleep testSource: BlueSleep pricing (opens in a new tab) | $215 |
| Initial visitSource: BlueSleep pricing (opens in a new tab) | $115 |
| Results visitSource: BlueSleep pricing (opens in a new tab) | $115 |
| Shipping and handlingSource: BlueSleep home sleep testing (opens in a new tab) | $19.50 |
| Total for one test, both visits, and shipping | $464.50 |
$215 + $115 + $115 + $19.50 = $464.50. Our calculation from BlueSleep’s published fees, checked October 7, 2026. It is not a quote from BlueSleep, and additional care costs extra.
Other published cash prices we checked
Published cash prices aren’t what you’d pay through insurance. Your cost through insurance depends on your plan’s benefits and how the provider bills. Providers can tell you how they bill and which plans they work with; only your plan can confirm your benefits.

What can add to a machine price
- Machine package
- Mask
- Heated tubing
- Replacement parts
- Shipping and tax
- Return terms
Buying through insurance is a separate route from paying a seller’s cash price. Your plan may require a covered supplier and specific documentation, and it sets your share of the cost. Ask the supplier and your plan before you order.
Questions about costs
Questions for providers and sellers
- What exactly does this price include, and what will be charged separately?
- Will shipping, tax, or other fees be added at checkout?
- Do you bill insurance, and which plans do you work with?
- What documentation do you need from me or my clinician?
Questions for your insurance plan
- Is home sleep testing covered for me, and do I need a referral or prior authorization?
- Which suppliers are covered for CPAP equipment?
- What documentation do you require for testing and for equipment?
- What will I pay out of pocket, and which costs fall outside what you cover?
Prescription and records help
Where you start depends on whether you already have a prescription.
Request a copy of an existing prescription
Ask the clinician or practice that prescribed your CPAP, or its records office, for a copy. Under HIPAA you have the right to see and get copies of your health information; a practice normally has up to 30 days to provide a copy and may charge a reasonable fee. HHS explains your right to access your records (opens in a new tab).
Ask about a renewal
If your prescription has expired, or a seller needs details it doesn’t list, ask your prescriber about a renewal. The prescriber decides whether you need a new visit or evaluation and whether to issue a new prescription.
Start a first evaluation
Never been diagnosed? A CPAP prescription follows a clinical evaluation and diagnosis. Start with your primary care clinician, a sleep clinician, or a home testing service that includes a clinical assessment.
Questions for your prescriber or records office
- Can you send me a copy of my current CPAP prescription?
- Does it include the details a supplier needs, such as the device type and settings?
- When does it expire, and what’s needed to renew it?
- Can you also send my sleep study report?
- Can you send the prescription directly to a supplier I choose?
- Is there a fee, and how long will it take?
What a seller needs to receive
CPAP machines require a prescription in the U.S. (opens in a new tab) Both listings we checked state that a prescription is required. Sellers set their own requirements for what it must show and how to send it, so ask before you order.
No listing or service can guarantee that a prescription will be issued.
